  • Herman Story, Nuts and Bolts, Syrah 2015

    $60.00

“Even better, his 2015 Nuts & Bolts is a smoking 100% Syrah that spent 16 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Full-bodied and decadent, yet never over-the-top, heady or cumbersome, it’s loaded with ripe blackberry, cassis, new leather, white pepper and hints of smoked duck. Drink this hedonistic beauty over the coming 4-6 years, although I see no reason to delay gratification either. “-95WA

  • Jonata, La Sangre de Jonata, Santa Ynez Valley, 2012

    $169.00

“Reminding me of a top Hermitage, the 2012 La Sangre de Jonata checks in as a blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier that’s aged primarily in neutral and larger oak barrels. It’s flat-out gorgeous in 2012 and gives up tons of black raspberry, crushed violets, cracked pepper and hints of game. Full-bodied, seamless, silky and fabulously pure, it has good acidity and fine tannin that come through on the finish. Give it a few years and enjoy bottles through 2032.” – 97 WA

  • Penfolds, Grange 2008

    $850.00

“Very deep garnet-purple in color the 2008 Grange reveals a truly decadent nose with tons of spices, fruit cake and black & blue fruit compote notes along with nuances of chocolate and potpourri. The full and rich, multi-layered palate has a little oak still showing, it is going through a little bit of a structural stand-out stage, but it doesn’t detract on the long and complex finish. It still needs a good few years to develop, though this very opulent, expressive Grange shows the very best of this vintage and the vineyards it hails from.”- 100WA

  • Reynvaan, The UnNamed Syrah, 2012

    $77.00

“Another pure, elegant and layered release from Matt Reynvaan, the 2012 The Unnamed Syrah exhibits subtle dark berry fruit, truffle, olive, lavender and smoked meat aromas and flavors in full-bodied, balanced, layered and seamless package. It picks up more classic violet and peppery herb notes with air and fills in beautifully on the mid-palate; nevertheless, it’s the least expressive at the moment aromatically, so give it a few years in the cellar. The blend here is 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache Blanc.” – 95+ WA

  • Sadie Family, Columella 2011

    $136.00

“The 2011 Columella is more reticent on the nose when compared directly against the 2010: straight-laced and linear with subtle tertiary notes that unfurl with aeration. This seems more masculine than the previous vintage. The palate is vibrant and poised on the entry with fresh crisp tannins, effervescent citrus fresh red and black fruit, a dash of white and black pepper and a beautifully poised finish. Once those aromatics awaken with time, this will be a stunning Columella. Drink 2015-2025. Eben Sadie simply wrote “old rules” in the spec sheet for his Old Vine Series, which sums up his approach perfectly. You never quite know what you will get with the wines – so please bear that in mind. That is what makes them so thrilling, because when they do excel they can represent something that attains true profundity, wines that are willing to offer intellectual as well as sensory pleasure. They are produced in small quantities so they can be difficult to track down, though in my opinion they remain very keenly priced for now.”-95WA
